Mark Scarr

The proprietor of The Dog House, LLC, Mark Scarr, is a retired lawyer.  Mark earned his juris doctor from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 2001.  He is a former deputy district attorney, getting most of his experience trying felony cases for the District Attorney’s Offices in both Pueblo Mesa Counties from 2003 to 2010.  His passion lay in prosecuting domestic violence offenders.

Education

Mark’s education in dog behavior began when he was four years old and got his first dog, Fritz, with whom he had a strong bond.  At 12 years old, his education continued at Scarr Animal Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he worked for his father, Leonard Scarr, an accomplished veterinarian who had a thriving practice for 48 years.  Mark continued working at his father’s animal hospital during the summers of his college education.

Dog

Mark’s dog, Shelby, was the “world’s worst puppy!”–  She had severe separation anxiety, she was very destructive (chewed everything), had barking fits, and was scared of just about everything.   She was returned to the shelter three times before she found a “dad” that could tame her wild soul.  Since then, Shelby has been recognized as a canine “good citizen,” as well as having earned her certification as a therapy dog.  As such, Shelby can go to nursing homes, hospitals, libraries, and schools, and interact with the patients and children.  “I always wanted a dog that I can take anywhere and do anything with, and now I have that.  It’s really fulfilling.”

Nursing home visit with Shelby

Shelby is a therapy dog

In his spare time, Mark can be seen around town on his motorcycle with Shelby riding on the back with her trademark helmet and goggles, on their way to visit patients at local nursing homes.
